Do you pursue the profit-loss ratio or the win rate?
Many people do not understand these two concepts of profit-loss ratio and win rate:
A secondary trader, 100 trades, 90 profitable, with a win rate of 90%. However, those 10 losses make him a losing trader with a 90% win rate. A primary investor/VC, 100 investments, 95 projects not profitable, with a win rate of 5%. But those 5 projects all have high returns. Overall, a big profit.
So a high win rate does not equal making a lot of money, and it can even lead to losses. Similarly, a low win rate does not mean losing money; one must realize that in investing and trading, the basic principle should be to minimize losses when losing and to avoid large losses when making profits.
Although it sounds like nonsense, it is indeed nonsense that makes a lot of sense without being said.
