Blockchain Solutions Revolutionize Travel Industry
The Camino Network Foundation, Lufthansa Systems, and Swiss International Air Lines have joined forces to spearhead innovative blockchain technology for the travel industry. In a collaborative effort, the three organizations hosted a web3-focused hackathon in Frankfurt, bringing together experts in blockchain and artificial intelligence to explore solutions that could redefine efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness in travel.
The hackathon, which spanned 48 hours, featured 13 teams from various travel and tech companies. These teams delved into leveraging the Camino Network blockchain to distribute flight and travel products more efficiently. Key areas of focus included payment methods, carbon offsetting, and expanding access to emerging sales markets.
Pablo Castillo, CEO of Chain4Travel and the initiator of the Camino Network, emphasized the transformative potential of blockchain. “The hackathon clearly showed how connections that used to take months can now be established within days. Compared to traditional distribution channels, the new solutions are significantly more efficient—offering up to 98% in cost savings and a 50% improvement in sustainability,” Castillo noted, referencing a successful demonstration by Hotelplan and Carbify’s CO₂ analysis.
Notable presentations included one by the Unimoni team, which developed a solution to integrate 300,000 India-based travel agencies into the Camino Network. Additionally, the SWISS and Digital Hangar team introduced a web3 travel identity solution that integrates wallet technology and allows the issuance of digital assets, such as vouchers and services.
The hackathon’s results revealed promising commercial potential, particularly in faster partner integrations and reduced distribution costs. Mickael Woelcke, project manager at SWISS, highlighted how the integration of Lufthansa Group flight content into the platforms was accomplished in just two days.
As the hackathon concludes, the Lufthansa Group plans to evaluate which projects could transition into pilot applications, signaling the next steps for blockchain solutions in the travel sector.
